Beauty Trend: Hair Spring/Summer 2011

Top Knots

Ultra-modern shapes and slick forms were the key to a new futurism in this season's hair. Drama and dynamism reigned supreme, as lengths moved skyward in spectacular high-shine, sci-fi-style chignons and buns. Aveda's Odile Gilbert created Lim's above-the-ear buns for the 3.1 show, and Rodarte's tightly-woven beauties, saying, "The inspiration [was] an alien...something very pure, simple and clean. I approached the hair like origami - carefully folding and wrapping hair in circular motions." Quirky, cool and experimental, take it one step further à la Dior with crimped textures and unbelievable height.

The look: top knots

Up, up and away! Slick and seriously disheveled up ‘dos were piled high at Christain Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Moschino and Emanuel Ungaro. The best bit about this look? It can be polished and modern or playful and carefree. "Think Kate Moss, with her easy chic style," hairstylist Jimmy Paul said backstage at Ungaro.

The look: lift it up

Blame it on the eighties craze that’s sweeping the fashion world this season, but outrageous Amy Winehouse-esque beehives hit new heights at Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier and Oscar de la Renta show. More wearable were the bouncy Christy Brinkley waves and stiffened backcombed fringes seen at Chloe and Gucci respectively.

Curls!

Toss your flat iron, retire your blow-dryer- curls are big for spring. If you look at Hollywood, the big eighties days are back. People are enjoying texture again—almost being promiscuous with their hair and just letting it be sexy.

Dual Texture

This season make a statement with your hair by experimenting with bold, contrasting textures. At Moschino hair was whipped up into cloud-like quiffs, while at Louis Vuitton slicked hair exploded into teased ponytails the texture of candyfloss.

Like many designers, Sonia Rykiel revisited the decade of excess. Her eighties inspired hair was poker straight at the roots and crimped, then teased, through the lengths.

Long Hair

You got short hair trends in the form of the pixie crop and the cropped bob, and in the middle is ye olde simple bob; so what does that leave us with? Long hair. And it's what I'm imploring, all girls grow.

You see, the bob is done and dusted for the truly fashion forward, and the shorter variations simply aren't going to suit everyone; but long hair? Long hair, cut and layered correctly leaves you able to take advantage of most of 2011's hair style trends. Consider just a few of the looks from the Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks.

Flowing: 2011 long hair style

Add a bit of oomph to a long hair style by wearing it in a heavily voluminous fashion.

Straight and Sleek: 2011 long hair style

Milkmaid Braids

Milkmaid braids are our first tip for women's 2011 hair style trends, as socialites and celebrities are increasingly seen with them off the red carpet. Like so many other trends of recent times, it was Sienna Miller (left) who did the most to push the look but that was way back in 2007. In 2011 it seems that milkmaid braids will be a hair style trend on and off the red carpet.

Lady Gaga took the trend to new heights (conehead, anyone?) on April 14th at Katsuya restaurant in in Brentwood, CA. Her hair, wrapped with what must be extensions, was braided and then sculpted into a foot-high 'do. Gotta give Gaga an "A" for originality, but is this look wearable?
